Veggie Treats: Low Protein

Postby rebecca&thegirls on Mon Apr 20, 2009 8:37 am

When is it good for my dog to use low protein food/treats? When your dog has kidney problems. Dogs with kidney failure seem to respond better to low protein items. The kidneys do not have to work as hard to process the low protein foods. Check with your vet for any special diet your dog may need.

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
6 tablespoons low sodium low fat chicken broth
1/2 cup cold water
1 cup cook veggies (you can use zucchini, sweet potatoes, winter squashes)

Combine dry ingredients. Mix in chicken broth and veggies. Add just enough cold water to form a ball. Then roll out the dough to 1/2 inch and use cookie cutters to make shapes. Place on non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees F. Let cool before giving to your dog.

**Any treats that do not contain preservatives are recommended to be stored in the refrigerator.
